ion channel receptors
What Are the Types of Ion Channel Receptors?
Ion channel receptors can be classified into several types based on their ligand specificity and function. Some of the major types include:
Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors (nAChRs)
: Activated by the neurotransmitter
acetylcholine
and are primarily found in the neuromuscular junction.
GABA Receptors
: Bind to
gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
and mediate inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system.
Glutamate Receptors
: Include AMPA, NMDA, and kainate receptors, which are activated by the neurotransmitter
glutamate
and are involved in excitatory neurotransmission.
P2X Receptors
: Respond to
adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
and are implicated in various physiological processes including pain sensation and inflammation.
