How is Alpha Synuclein Linked to Parkinsonâs Disease?
Alpha synuclein aggregation is a hallmark of Parkinsonâs disease pathogenesis. Genetic mutations and multiplications of the SNCA gene, which encodes alpha synuclein, have been linked to familial forms of the disease. These genetic alterations increase the propensity of alpha synuclein to form toxic aggregates. Furthermore, environmental factors such as oxidative stress and exposure to neurotoxins can exacerbate alpha synuclein aggregation.
